You have to decide what is practical. The higher the setting the more chances it will catch on things. It needs to withstand everyday wear. You will have to take into consideration whether she works behind a desk or in a factory that uses chemicals. A heavier style will last longer. That doesn't mean necessarily wider, just a stronger shank. If you prefer a more delicate style, go with platinum, it will outlast gold anytime.
It needs to hold the diamond securely. Six prongs are best to hold the diamond. A heavier setting is stronger than a light setting and lower setting is less likely to be damaged than a higher setting.
As for it looking good, that is a very personal choice. Take a good look at all the different designs and choose one you think your lady love will treasure.
